Kit review: Alpkit Fortitude Waterproof Jacket

Reviewed by Steph

When you're in the hills and mountains, you want to be able to trust your waterproof jacket to keep you warm and dry. This 3-layer waterproof jacket from Alpkit is designed for this terrain and this weather.

FEATURES:
The jacket is a slightly longer cut than some of the other waterproofs I have, aiming for better coverage from the weather (I found the shape reduced the water running straight off my jacket onto my trousers, which is something I hate!). In addition, you can fit an OS map in the chest pocket, and access the main pockets even with a rucksack hip strap on. Sadly no pit zips for ventilation (I get hot easily!), but it has a two way zip (so you can unzip from the bottom) and there is a waist draw cord that allows you to cinch it in depending on your layering. The main part of the fabric is recycled and the waterproof coating is PFC free, and the hood is a good size with plenty of adjustment possible.

SIZE AND FIT:
Alpkit have recently expanded into a size 20, but this is the largest size currently. As with most Alpkit clothing, I find it fits me well even though I'm a few inches larger than the size chart. The chart for a size 20 says a 45 inch chest, 38 inch waist and 48 inch hip, and I'm a 46 inch chest, 41 inch waist and 51 inch hip and this fits me well, with room for a warm layer underneath.

PERFORMANCE:
I tested this coat out on a few mountain days recently and I've been really impressed. I love the longer cut of it, and features like the double zip, large chest pocket (so useful being able to put a map in there!!) and the higher zips on the main pockets made a real difference compared to some other coats. It kept me completely dry in the rain and was also really effective against the wind chill too. It's also lightweight and small enough to carry around in your bag easily.

RRP £199.99
