Kit review: Outdoor Research SuperStrand LT Insulated Jacket

Reviewed by Emily

FEATURES
Really lightweight synthetic insulated jacket from Outdoor Research , available in plus sizes with or without a hood. The super strand insulation is soft and light and fluffy and warm, and the ripstop fabric keeps the wind out and protects against the odd bit of drizzle. It’s got two generous zipped pockets, and it’s really easy to bundle the whole jacket into one of them if you need to stash it in a bag.

SIZING AND FIT
The plus size version of this jacket goes up to a 4X (59” bust). As with all Outdoor Research clothes I am bang on the cusp of two sizes for my hip measurement - for this one I chose the smaller size 2XL which fits bust 45-48.5in, waist 43-47.5in and hip 49-53in and I am a bust 47”, waist 41” and hips 52.5”. The sizing chart is pretty accurate in terms of fit, the coat fits comfortably round my bust and has a little ease at the hips.

PERFORMANCE
I really LOVE this coat - it is worn a lot during the evenings and in winter - on walks, under a waterproof for cycling round town, after swims, as my warm garment when camping. It is perfectly placed in that ‘warm but not sweaty’ space and hits my personal sweet-spot for gentle exercise. Because I chose the a size that fits me pretty snugly this fits under a waterproof to become the ultimate winter mid layer, and offers enough in the way of protection that the odd little spot of rain or snow doesn’t bother me at all. It’s super light, and packs down really small so is great for taking on bike/canoe packing trips - I’ve been searching for a jacket like this for years and am so so so pleased that there is finally one in my size. The thing it takes a bit of getting used to is that (I presume because it’s American) the zip is the other way round to my other coats, but that’s something I am very happy to overlook because of it’s outstanding performance in all other areas!
