KIT REVIEW: Paramo Alta III Jacket

Reviewed by Steph

Paramo have recently expanded their sizing in two of their women's jackets - the Alta III and the Velez Adventure Smock - expanding up to a 3XL (approx size 24-26).

FEATURES
The first thing to note about Paramo jackets is that they function in a different way to normal hard shell jackets - they use a two layer 'directionality' system that moves moisture away from your body as well as keeping you dry from the rain - which means it's remarkably breathable. The downside is that it's quite thick and heavy, meaning it's better suited to days where you'll be out in the rain or cold all day, as opposed to a jacket you pack in case of a shower. It's very well equipped with pockets, including two waist pockets, a zippable large chest pocket that can fit a map, a smaller velcro chest pocket and two internal pockets.

SIZE AND FIT
I wore the XXL and I normally wear a size 20 in outdoor gear. Paramo do not provide a 'to fit' measurement, instead providing a comprehensive list of garment measurements - the half chest and half hip measurements are both 29 inches. I have a 46 inch chest, 41 inch waist and 51 inch hip, and found the jacket generous on me. I've tried on the XL before and found it a little snug, and I think this jacket would probably fit a size larger than me too. The cut is great, and perfectly designed so there are no overly baggy or bunching bits of fabric. The one thing is that it is quite a long cut, so may be less ideal if you're very short.

PERFORMANCE
I tested this jacket in some hideously wet weather and it kept me completely dry. In addition, I found that I got less sweaty than I normally do in a waterproof, even walking up a hill. To help with ventilation, there are vents in the upper arms, a double zip and the ability to roll up the sleeves (which I found surprisingly effective). I definitely couldn't wear it in warmer months but have found it a revelation in colder weather.

The other big bonus is the feel of the jacket - it's much softer and more comfortable to wear than a lot of traditional hardshell jackets. An investment, but worth it!
